Orfèvre de l’orchestration, passionné par la dramaturgie en musique, Fidel Fourneyron a su se constituer peu à peu un style singulier et immédiatement reconnaissable, évoluant dans un univers résolument post-jazz et ouvert sur les musiques d’aujourd’hui.
Avec ce troisième album en leader, le tromboniste de l’ONJ Olivier Benoit présente Animal, un trio qui réunit, pour la première fois autour de ses compositions, deux musiciens parmi les plus en vue sur la scène jazz actuelle : Joachim Florent à la contrebasse et Sylvain Darrifourcq à la batterie. Pour ce répertoire original, hommage vivant et joyeux au monde animal, Fidel Fourneyron travaille sur le blues dans la mélodie et les inflexions, sur la recherche et l’originalité des sons, le groove toujours, le zapping et la surprise comme source d’inspiration dans l’improvisation, et la finesse des lignes et contrepoints comme tremplin à l’euphorie du jeu collectif.
Il convie cette section rythmique hors pair à l’étude d’un bestiaire finement choisi; chaque thème est pensé à partir d’une posture, d’un mouvement ou d’une particularité observé chez les animaux. Le discours musical du trio trouve sa clarté et sa force dans cette observation. L’animalité est le point de départ d’une musique tournée vers l’intuition; le cri animal n’est pas sans rappeler le blues et son dépouillement, la musique du trio en est aussi fortement imprégnée, et c’est avant tout de chant qu’il est question ici. L’étrange animal hurle, piaffe et roucoule, bondit de souvenirs de blues en élans lyriques et transes rythmiques avec finesse et fantaisie.

He invites this outstanding rhythm section to study a finely chosen bestiary; each theme is based on a posture, a movement or a peculiarity observed in animals. The trio’s musical discourse finds its clarity and strength in this observation. Animality is the starting point for a music that’s turned towards intuition; the animal cry is reminiscent of the blues and its stripped-down style, and the trio’s music is also strongly imbued with it, and it’s above all singing that’s at stake here. The strange animal howls, squeals and coos, leaping from blues memories to lyrical outbursts and rhythmic trances with finesse and fantasy.
